Quiet Shore
Vaikne Kallas (Quiet Shore) is the name of a lovely street in Haapsalu, a place to walk and to enjoy the quiet town and a view of the water. This pattern was inspired by the Sofia pattern from Haapsalu, Estonia. This lace pattern was found in the UKU archives (a craft co-operative) in the 1970’s and is attributed to Haapsalu knitter Sinaida Sõer (1916-1980). It had been commissioned by the President of Estonia and given as a gift to Queen Sofia of Spain in 2009 during a state visit. That design is now known as the Sofia pattern.
In my pattern, the outlining openwork lines are wider than the original Sofia pattern. The diamonds in the center pattern (which are worked with a stockinette stitch ground) fit well into the triangular shape.
The center of the shawl starts with 3 stitches and is knit up from the bottom point of the shawl. After the first 6 rows, repeat the indicated rows of the Body Chart until the shawl reaches the desired size. This center is bound off with a loose edge.
The scalloped edge of this shawl is made with the traditional garter stitch ground. It is worked in the ‘modern’ way -- picked up and knitted rather than the traditional method of knitting the edge separately and sewing it on. The edge is added by picking up stitches along both sides of the “V” and knitting back and forth.
The top border is picked up last and knit as a simple garter stitch edging. Follow directions for Finishing and Blocking to bring out the final beauty of the finished shawl.
