The Quicksilver Socks is a super fun sock design created in collaboration with the 2025 New Years Eve boxes from Fantasy Fibers Yarn Co inspired by the novel Quicksilver. The socks have a contrasting cuff and toe, as well as some criss-cross cabling texture and mosaic colourwork throughout the leg of the sock. The texture and colourwork are inspired by the book cover, with the butterflies and pops of colour. The socks are knit cuff down, with a heel flap and gusset, and an anatomical toe.

Size:
X-Small (Small, Medium, Large) X-Large
Note: Measurements are for the circumference around the ball of the foot.

Circumference (unstretched):
Approximately 7 (7.5, 8, 8.5) 9 inches / 18 (19, 20.5, 21.5) 23 cm

Circumference (stretched):
Up to approximately 8 (8.5, 9-9.5, 9.5-10) 11-11.5 inches / 20 (22, 23-24, 24-25) 28-29 cm

Note: These measurements are based on my sample piece; yours may vary slightly depending on gauge and tension. Please choose a size where the measurement of the circumference of the ball of your foot falls within the unstretched-stretched range. A rule of thumb that I have seen is that a sock should be made with about 15-20% negative ease (eg. my foot circumference is 8.5 inches / 21 cm, I would want a sock that has about 6.75-7.25 inch / 17-18 cm circumference, so I would knit the XS). The length of the socks is customizable based on your foot length, so only base your size on the foot circumference.

Needles recommended:
2.75 mm / US 2
- Cord length at least 32-40 inches / 80-100 cm for magic loop method. You can use 9 inch / 22.5 cm circulars or DPNs instead if you wish, though the pattern is written for magic loop.

I use Kollage Soft Cable Circulars for Magic Loop knitting and they are amazing!

Note: You may need other size needles to meet gauge.

Gauge (blocked):
In stockinette, in the round, and blocked
4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm) = 32 sts x 40 rows

Make sure to block your swatch, as this can significantly change the size of your swatch depending on your fiber choice.

Note: If your stitch gauge is correct but your row gauge is off a little, you’ll be ok, because you will be customizing the # of rounds used anyways to match the length of your foot.

Yarn recommended:
Any fingering/sock weight yarn that you can get gauge with.
The pattern is designed to be knit with a Main Colour (MC) and two Contrast Colours (CC) (I used a sock set with two minis). The full skein/MC will be used for the main sock body, one mini/CC will be used for the contrast cuff and toe, and one mini/CC will be used for some contrasting pops of colour in the main sock body. You could omit the colourwork and work those rounds in the MC instead, or work the colourwork in the same colour as the cuffs/toes if you wanted to only use one CC.

In the pictured sample, I used Fantasy Fibers Enemies to Lovers Fingering - 437 yds / 400 m per 100g skein, 87 yds / 80 m per 20g mini, in Helm’s Deep (MC) and two miscellaneous colours of scrap yarn (CCs).

I also worked up a sample using Fantasy Fibers Enemies to Lovers Fingering - 437 yds / 400 m per 100g skein, 87 yds / 80 m per 20g mini, in the 2025 New Years Eve Box sock set colourways based on the novel Quicksilver. This sample is not shown yet in order to avoid spoilers for those that ordered the box.

Yardage recommended:

Based on Estimated Sock Foot Length of:
8.5 (9.5, 10, 11) 12 inches / 21.5 (24, 25, 27.5) 30 cm

Main Colour:
195 (225, 250, 290) 325 yds / 178 (206, 229, 265) 297 meters

Contrast Colour 1 (cuff/toes):
36 (44, 47, 51) 56 yds / 33 (40, 43, 47) 51 meters

Contrast Colour 2 (colourwork):
11 (12, 13, 14) 15 yds / 10 (11, 12, 13) 14 meters

Note: Yardage is an approximation and based on the estimated foot length listed above for each size plus a buffer of approximately 5%. This should be more than enough for most foot lengths, but if you have longer feet than the estimated length above, I would go with a little extra yardage just to be safe!
