As a newer knitter, I am always looking for a quick knitting project that I can give as a gift to others and show off my newfound love. I prefer giving gifts as a surprise, however, so I needed something that I could quickly make for someone without having to stop and measure various portions of their body. These mitts were the perfect solution; the “hidden” ribbing and drop stitches can accommodate a wide variety of hands, wrists, and forearms. This bite-sized project is also a very quick knit, perfect for last minute gifting when you don’t want to knit something too hot in the spring or summer.

Techniques Used

  • Knitting and purling flat and in the round
  • Provisional Cast On
  • Picking up stitches
  • Dropped stitches
  • Yarn over and reverse yarn over (explained in pattern)
  • Kitchener (or 3 needle bind off)
  • Simple cables

Finished Measurements
6.5” Long and 3 (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10)” in Cuff Circumference

Because of the stretchiness built into the pattern, only the cuff circumference is crucial. Choose the size based off where you wish the mitt to sit on your arm (measure the circumference of that area and try to have 1/2” to 1” negative ease) then knit the rib pattern up to the base of your thumb before doing the thumb increases. (This may increase your yardage).
