There’s a reason why there are so many patterns in recent months that use a lace weight mohair/silk yarn carried along with another strand: It creates the most beautiful halo and adds warmth without adding bulk. In Querrine, it compliments a stitch pattern that looks like lace but isn’t by filling in the gaps and adding that oh-so-soft fuzz to the fabric.

Querrine is designed with about 3-4 in./7.5-10 cm negative ease because the stitch pattern is so stretchy, with the added bonus of a double-thick hemmed brim that keeps your ears warm and keeps the hat firmly on your head. If you aren’t a fan of the mohair halo or can’t tolerate it, the pattern works just as nicely in a single strand of sport weight yarn (the orange/blue/tan sample shown in the photos was knit from a single strand of sport weight merino handspun).

To knit this pattern, you need to know how to:

• knit and purl in the round,
• work single (k2tog) and double (CDD) decreases,
• increase via m1 increases, and
• work a pattern stitch using a chart or written instructions.
