It is the winter season of celebrations once again, and whether you’re celebrating Yule or Christmas or any of the many other festivals that grace the darkest month, there’s something special about the spices and simplicity of a pumpkin pie dotted with swirls of whipped cream at the end of a meal.
The Pumpkin Pi poncho is in essence a circular shawl with the center scooped out. The pattern follows the principals of pi shawl shaping to create a completely circular finished garment that is easy to wear as a festive topper to any outfit. The main body of the poncho is worked in plain stocking stitch to represent the smooth custard of a pumpkin pie, with circular motifs in the middle and along the edge that represent delicious dollops of whipped cream.
Materials Needed:
- @1200-1260 yards fingering weight yarn sample worked in L’Est A Laine Merino wool, a breed being developed in France
- 4mm (US 6) circular needle or size needed for gauge
Optional:
- 1 unique stitch marker to mark beginning of rounds
- 47 additional stitch markers
Gauge: 24 stitches x 30 rows over 4”/10cm in stocking stitch before blocking.
Note that I do not consider gauge to be essential for a lace shawl. Instead, I recommend swatching for a fabric you like. If your gauge is markedly different from that given in the pattern, you will need to adjust your yardage accordingly.
