The Design
This cowl symbolises one of Shetlands favourite seasonal visitors - The Puffin!

  • The beak colour sequence can be found in the edge rib sections at the top and the bottom.
  • In chart rows 6-18 I have created a shape that can be interpreted a couple of ways, First it could be puffin tracks on the ground as the bird is waddling around the cliffs of Shetland, or it could be silhouettes of the bird in flight. I’ll let you decide what yours will be!
  • The next section represents a more abstract outline of the profiles of puffins all standing in a line. This is a very traditional border to use in Shetland, so I am delighted to have made it work in this piece.
  • The centre section is dedicated to the eye of the puffin. Puffins are full of character and I think the strong colours of the eye has a lot to do with that. I put together the black motifs on the white background, then put a slash of orange in the centre there to add some drama to the section.

I hope you enjoy knitting each section as much as I enjoyed creating them!

This cowl is made with 3 colours of Jamiesons of Shetland yarn but this can be substituted with any other fingering weight yarn.
