Prynhawn Da
Prynhawn Da is Welsh for ‘Good Afternoon’, and an afternoon tea accompanied by these place settings would be a good afternoon indeed. The Pi shawl construction allows a natural and elegant development of the pattern from coaster to place mat.
Pattern suggests making 2 of each of coaster and placemat in each of three colours.
Yarn
Rico Design Essentials Crochet (Heavyweight Lace, 100% Mercerized Cotton, 280m/50g),
1 ball each in:
White 001
Turquoise 010
Pink 021
Each coaster uses 3.5g/20m yarn
Each placemat uses 10g/56m yarn
Needles
2.5mm crochet hook for cast-on only
3mm DPNs, 15cm, set of 5
Notions
1 stitch marker
Tapestry needle
Finished Measurements
Coaster: block points to 16cm diameter (relaxes to approx. 14cm)
Place mat: block points to 28cm diameter (relaxes to approx. 25cm)
Tension
As each item is a small circular Pi-construction knit, stitch tension changes every round and cannot be reliably measured on this small scale.
Rnd tension: 10cm = 29 rnds measured over patt whilst blocking.
Notes
- When transferring sts to DPNs, place beg of rnd st marker at midpoint of one DPN.
- Adjust number of DPNs in use and position of sts as stitch count increases so each DPN has 2 complete pattern repeats (16sts) by the time Chart A is reached.
- You may find it easiest to place sts onto 2 DPNs initially after the cast-on and increase number of DPNs in use as stitch count increases.
