Prudence Cap, or Ruff for Neck by Mrs. I. J. (Jane) Gaugain

Prudence Cap, or Ruff for Neck

Out of print. This pattern was available for free.

Composed of six coloured stripes, and five white. The six coloured stripes appear as if they were all garter stitch, on the right side (1), and the five white, as if all stocking stitch. When the work is cast off, it will, of itself, form seven plaits of colour, which draw close together at each end, and fasten it by sewing to each a piece of ribbon, about half-a-yard in length, so as to tie under the chin; the ribbon used is about two and a half inches wide. The Cap requires eight penny skeins of coloured Berlin Wool, and six of white. Work with two wires of No. 9 (2).

(1) They mean reverse stockinette
(2) Equivalent to a 3.75 mm needles.

Published in 1842. A modernized version of this pattern is available in the magazine Piecework, as Prudence Cap or Neck Ruff for Miss Pole
