Pattern Description from Heirloom Knitting: “This most attractive square shawl is knitted in Lace-weight 2 ply Shetland wool (which equates with a standard 4 ply yarn). I designed this using a variety of Shetland tree and fern motifs, which are in the centre pattern, border and edging. This is easier to knit than it looks, as it is a pattern-every-other-row design, made on quite large sized needles. This shawl is not a true Shetland shawl, because the borders are made individually first and then sewn together before the centre pattern is made - and before the edging is knitted round as the final element. The hardest part is grafting the final row of the centre square to the last border, but if time is taken, the result is beautiful, and indistinguishable from a knitted row. This would make a striking shawl for an adult if made in black, or in a Cobweb white 1 ply, using British 9/3.5mm - or if using smaller needles, the pattern would need to be enlarged, extra stitches for more repeat panels of the border and centre would need including - only for the very experienced to try.”

• 11 x 1oz (28g) hanks of Jamieson & Smith Lace-weight 2 ply, in white, wound into balls
• 5mm Circular needle - (British size 6), 60 cm long or equivalent knitting needles
• Tapestry needle
