Pattern Description from Heirloom Knitting: “This beautiful and striking shawl is knitted in jumper weight 2 ply Shetland wool, predominantly in natural shades. This demonstrates the characteristics of a hap or shoulder shawl but in a circular form, with traditionally inspired colour changes. It would be equally dramatic if it were all black or any other single colour; certainly it would be simpler to knit! The finished size is 72 inches (180cm) in diameter - it could be 48 inches (120cm) instead. It is made by starting with a few centre stitches and knitted outwards; when finished, there is one seam to sew up from the edge to the centre.”

Materials:

  • All wool is Jamieson & Smith Jumper-weight 2 Ply
  • 10 x 1 oz (280g) hanks of charcoal- shade 81 (A)
  • 3 x 1 oz (84g) hanks of dark grey - shade 54 (B)
  • 3 x 1 oz (84g) hanks of mid grey - shade 27 (C)
  • 3 x 1 oz (84g) hanks of light grey- shade 203 (D)
  • 3 x 1 oz (84g) hanks of cream - shade 1A (E)
  • Tapestry needle
  • 4mm and 5 mm Circular needles - (British sizes 8 and 6), respectively 60cm and 90 cm long or equivalent knitting needles; the longer size circular needle in the larger size makes knitting this much easier near the end where there is a considerable number of stitches (720sts.) per row.

Notes:

  • “Make 1” = bring the wool forward purlwise and then take it back over the top of the needle. Otherwise known as an “over.”
  • Work the slash symbols as “knit 2 together,” the fanning of this pattern slants their direction.
  • When breaking off wool and joining in a new colour, leave long “tails” of yarn - at least 6 inches - for sewing in later.
