Pörkenäs
PROMOTION: 25% OFF with code KNITCAMP until Feb 24, 2019.
Pörkenäs is a brioche sweater I designed especially for brioche beginners after teaching brioche workshops at a knitting retreat in Pörkenäs in Finland.
I had the most amazing human experience, sharing knitting and life stories with a group of fabulous ladies, and I wanted to design a piece that would remind me of these few days forever.
It is worked in the round from the top down, and the brioche motifs only call for one type of increase and decrease (the easy ones!).
Change colours as often as you like, and wear it inside out to show off your contrasting colours if you like, because it is completely reversible!
YARN
I used 3 colours of fingering weight yarn.
Col A: Das Mondschaf, Aurora, 100% merino, 366m / 100g. Shown in Totoro. 210 (240, 270, 300, 330, 370, 410) m
Col B: Walk Collection, Cozy Silk, 70% merino 30% silk, 400m / 100g. Shown in Alaska. 210 (240, 270, 300, 330, 370, 410) m
Col C: Townhouse Yarns, Fade St 4 ply, 70% merino 30% silk, 400m / 100g. Shown in Woollinn. 180 (200, 220, 250, 280, 310, 340) m
NEEDLES AND NOTIONS
3,5mm / US4 circular needles, or size required to obtain gauge
markers, tapestry needle
GAUGE
16 stitches x 32 rows/rounds = 10cm / 4” in plain two-colour brioche when slightly stretched
SIZE
XS (S, M, L, 1X, 2X, 3X)
71 (81, 91, 101, 111, 122, 132) cm bust /
28 (32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52) in bust
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Recommended ease: at least 10 cm of negative ease and up to 20.
I recommend to choose the smaller size if you hesitate between two options, since the brioche fabric is very stretchy and will look more flattering when stretched.
Collar circumference: 50 (50, 60, 60, 70, 70, 70) cm / 20 (20, 24, 24, 28, 28, 28) in
Bust circumference: 60 (70, 80, 90, 100, 106, 112) cm / 24 (28, 32, 36, 40, 41, 44) in
Lower body circumference: 47 (55, 62, 70, 78, 86, 92) cm / 18,5 (21.5, 24,5, 28, 31, 34, 36) in
Sleeve cap circumference: 28 (33, 33, 36, 41, 43, 46) cm / 11 (13, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18) in
Total length: 48 (53, 53, 55, 62, 64, 64) cm / 19 (21, 21, 21.5, 24.5, 25, 25) in
NOTE: Colour changes
All 3 colours are used in turns as MC and CC.
Change colours as often as you wish, and create more stripes or more colour blocks as you go.
Change colours one at a time (MC or CC , not both at once): colours will overlap and transition nicely.
The lower body ribbed section requires the same amount of each of the 3 yarns: keep this in mind and use your colours thoughtfully in the brioche section.
When changing colours, use the “spit-splice” joining method: felt the new colour together with your working yarn by rubbing both ends vigorously in your palms with a little spit or water. Taper both ends beforehand for a smoother result. This will save you the trouble of weaving in ends, and will ensure complete reversibility of your sweater.
