This is a very simple shawl worked in exactly the same way as half a granny square. Seven bands of colour represent the first seven numbers in the Fibonacci Sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13.

The shawl in the photos was made with seven shades of mohair. The pattern tells you how to calculate the amounts needed of your chosen yarn. The second band takes the biggest amount, followed by the third, first, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh.

If you choose a much finer yarn you could add another band for the next Fibonacci number. You have to decide on this before you begin as the higher numbers are worked first.

The pattern is also available in Mufflermatics an ebook of mathematical scarves and shawls.
