The PNW Bucket Hat was inspired by the gorgeous colors in the hand dyed Alpacas of York yarn I purchased at the Maryland Alpaca and Fleece Festival. With shades of orange, golden yellow and greens, this yarn had to become a hat and cowl as I can see this set being worn on short hike to see the changing leaves of the Pacific Northwest.

I used one of my favorite stitches, the X-stitch, for the hat to ensure that I could make a hat with one hank of 125 yards. Since it’s a bulky yarn, the hat with open X-stitches only requires 91 yards. I added a second version in which the X-stitch is worked as an overlay for those that live in a colder climate. With the short brim, it provides additional coverage and style to be worn like a bucket hat or rolled like a bowl hat.

For the cowl, it’s a bandana style with a button closure. As a person with longer hair, I prefer cowls that are easy to put on and take off without getting tangled in my hair. LOL. The triangle shape is perfect for adding warmth without too much bulk when worn with a coat. The alternating rows of X-stitches and double crochet create drape and warmth.

Note: The Alpacas of York yarn is between a bulky and super bulky yarn. Additional yarn may be required if using a super bulky yarn like Bernat Softee Chunky.
