Placitas Lace Wrap
Placitas, New Mexico is a small mountain town north of Albuquerque. This Lace Wrap is dedicated to a period of time in my knitting life which has come to a close. Our very dear friend Frankie had been in the process of moving to California for quite some time. The week I finished this wrap, their house sold and we spent our final afternoon knitting in her beautiful Placitas home. Within mere days of this my knitting family learned that the owner of the Anasazi Fields Winery of Placitas, where we would often retreat to knit and where our local World Wide Knit In Public Day was held for many years, had suddenly passed away. It felt right to name this Lace Wrap after a place that holds so many fond knitting memories. Change is good and it always allows us to grow, but memories last a lifetime!
CONSTRUCTION:
Beginning with a Provisional Cast On, Placitas Lace Wrap is knit from one edge to the other. As you finish the body of the Wrap, you cast on additional stitches and knit the knitted-on lace edging. When the first Lace Edge is completed, you return to the provisional cast on, pick up all of the stitches here and repeat the same steps for the Knitted On Lace Border on this side.
YARN:
This project was a collaboration with MJ Yarns of Colorado. I used their Opulent Fingering Yarn in the colorway “Mother’s Love.” MJ Yarns is available at select retail yarn stores. You can also experiment and use a lace weight yarn or even a heavier sport or DK weight, but please keep in mind if you make changes you will need to adjust your yardage accordingly.
DIMENSIONS:
Placitas Lace Wrap measures 99 inches long and 22 inches wide blocked.
YARDAGE:
Approximately 1,300 yards; I used two skeins and about 45 grams of the third skein. I have added generous yardage estimates for loose knitters. You will most definitely need three skeins of fingering weight yarn to do this project.
GAUGE:
In Stockinette blocked: 4 ½ - 5 stitches to the inch, 9 ½ rows to the inch.
The Solid Sterling Silver Penannular Shawl Pin seen in the third picture down was hand made by Silversmith Wayne Book and is from Mooncat Fiber in Taos, New Mexico and can be purchased there!
