I came up with the idea for this type of scrap yarn memory blanket from a desire to do something a little different from the standard mitered square blankets that are out there. I wanted something that would be interesting to knit, give an opportunity to play with colours (planned or unplanned) and I wanted it to be travel friendly. I travel quite frequently and I am always sad that I can’t take my mitered square blanket with me, as it is too large to travel with. So I wanted to come up with a modular blanket that wouldn’t feel overwhelming to seam together at the end. I had recently finished a pair of cushions using a pinwheel construction method and really liked this idea for a blanket, and so the idea was born. I started playing with different options for construction of the blocks and seaming methods until I landed on a combination that I felt was both simple and fun to do!

What you will need:

Yarn:

Scrap yarn in a variety of colours – you will need approx. 4-5grams for each triangle. (You could also choose to do a more thought out version with planned colour choices and placement). Also note that if you decide to change the stitch count or needle sizes this could have an impact on the amount of yarn you will need for each triangle section.
You will also need a neutral yarn to use for seaming if you are choosing to do the crochet seaming method mentioned in the pattern as this method of seaming can be seen slightly from the right side of the work.

Needles

3mm (US 2.5) 6 inch DPN’s (you can choose to use straight needles or circulars if you wish. If you cannot find 3mm needles then 3.25mm (US3) or 2.75mm (US2) will work as well. Really as long as you are happy with the fabric the needle size isn’t that important

Notions

• A 3mm crochet hook for seaming (or size to match your needles), you only need a crochet hook if you are doing the crochet seaming otherwise you can leave this out.
• If you are using DPN’s then I would suggest using some Point Protectors to stopper the ends of your needles so you don’t accidentally lose stitches off the end.
• Tapestry Needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge – Approx. 26 stitches per 10cm/4 inches.
