Philippa Jumper
This jumper is often known as “My First Jumper” – it’s a great project for beginners or for anyone picking up their needles again after a long break. It could just as easily be called “My first jumper after 20 years of not knitting!”.
There’s minimal shaping involved. The back is a simple square with no shaping at all, so it’s perfect for getting used to the rhythm of knit stitch without having to think about anything else.
I love knitting garter stitch. At the end of a busy day – whether I’ve been running around or staring at a screen – I just want to sit down, breathe and knit something soothing. Garter stitch is my go-to on days like these. It’s ideal for working a row or two while waiting for supper to cook.
If you’re looking for something even simpler, take a look at the York Sweater, which doesn’t require any picking up of stitches around the neck.
I wear my Philippa Jumper almost every day in winter, so if you’ve visited the Skipton Studio in the colder months, you’ve probably seen me in it! One of my versions is knitted in Croft Shetland Aran, though there are so many arans in the Purl &Jane yarn family to choose from!
CONSTRUCTION
The back, front and two sleeves are knitted flat from the bottom up in separate pieces and joined together. The sleeves are drop. The neck edge is picked up and knitted.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, decreasing at neck shaping, increasing on the sleeves. Joining seams. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: three needle cast off and mattress stitch.
YARN
7(8:9:10) 100g hanks of WYS Bluefaced Leicester Aran.
100% British Bluefaced Leicester wool, 166m/182yds per 100g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
4.5mm and 5mm.
GAUGE (tension)
17 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm/4ins square over pattern. I obtained this gauge with 5mm needles.
It is important to obtain the correct gauge so do work a swatch before you start the pattern and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
FINISHED MEASUREMENT
I recommend a positive ease of 6-15ins/15-38cm at the chest.
