Phases of the Moon Clog Socks
About The Design:
I originally published this design in the Summer 2004 issue of my Heels & Toes Gazette. I offer it now as a separate pattern, for your enjoyment.
Many years ago, I designed garments using my handspun, naturally-dyed yarns. Some of the yarns were subtly colored, others were vibrant, from the cochineal, indigo and various woods I used for dyes.
One design was a jacket, in indigo blue, with rows of large phases of the moon running around the body in ascending hues, beginning with corals and russets at the lower edge and lightening to golds and yellows then ecrus and white. It was definitely an art-to-wear piece.
Though the garment is long gone, I revived the idea, in a more wearable garment. I re-scaled the chart, and created one repeat around the leg of a sock – plenty of moons for anyone! I made the sample in white moons on a teal ground, but you could use a multi-colored, striped or hand-painted yarn in those original warm colors to use for the moons and set them on a contrasting-colored ground.
