Persecuted Pangolin
Pangolins are the most heavily trafficked mammals in the world. Up to 2.7 million are poached every year for scales and meat and all eight species of pangolins are threatened with extinction.
This pangolin is modeled after the African Ground Pangolin. It is knitted in the round, beginning at the tail, and the scales are knitted as you go. The legs are added at the end. The final size is 18” (46 cm) long when knitted with fingering weight yarn.
Intermediate/experienced knitters will enjoy this pattern, but it could be somewhat frustrating for less experienced knitters. There are lots of short rows and scales, but once you have knitted a few, they become much easier.
It requires about 320 yds/290 m sock or fingering weight yarn. Use any yarn, but yarn that includes at least 50% wool will hold the shape better and is recommended for this pattern in order for the scales to lie flat.
You may use any weight yarn, so long as you use a needle size to give a tight weave so that the stuffing does not show through. If you use a heavier weight yarn the final size will be quite a bit bigger and you will need more yarn.
The sample is knitted with 80g / 320 yds (290 m) Knit Picks Chroma fingering.
You will need a U cable stitch holder for knitting the scales.
Should you have questions about getting started I have made a YouTube video on knitting the first 5 rounds. You can find it at https://youtu.be/ChY1YpNIVtg
