These ancient invertebrates have been drifting with the ocean currents long before dinosaurs roamed the earth—more than 500 million years ago.

There are 2 versions of jellyfish included in this pattern.

Felted Bell: The felted bell pattern uses 100% wool that can be felted to obtain the hollow bell shape.
Yarn:
75 yds (68 m) Aran weight feltable wool for the bell
100 yds (91 m) Sock or fingering weight yarn for the arms
15 yds (14 m) Laceweight yarn for the tentacles.
Needles:
1 set size 8 (5mm) double point needles (dpns) for the bell.
1 set dpns size 7 (4.5mm) for the bell and upper arm cast on.
1 set dpns size 4 (3.5mm) for the arms.

Wire Bell: The wire bell is knitted with 30 ga (0.25mm, 0.010”) or finer silver plated copper craft wire.
Yarn:
80 ft (24 m) Silver plated copper craft wire, 30 ga (0.25mm, 0.010”) or finer (32 ga preferred)
60 yds (55 m) Lace weight yarn for the arms
12 yds (11 m) Lace weight yarn for the tentacles
Needles:
1 set size 4 (3.5mm) dpns for the bell
1 set size 3 (3.25mm) dpns for the arms
1 set size 6 (4 mm) needles for the upper arm cast on

The felted bell pattern is intermediate level or possibly advanced beginner. The wire bell is for experienced knitters as the wire is quite difficult to work with.

The bell is knitted in the round. The upper central arms are knitted in the round and the lower arms are knitted flat and then tied onto the upper arm section. The arm assembly is then sewn onto the bell. Finally the tentacles are tied around the edge of the bell.
