Perpendicular Socks
Errata available:

This pattern was entered in the Think Outside the Sox contest in early 2009 and is included in the book published at the end of April 2010.
Unlike most socks, these are knit in many directions. Strips of garter stitch arranged horizontally and vertically are knit in one piece to cover the leg and the top of the foot. The sole and the toe are knit on afterward, as is a small top border.
This pattern is not suitable for people who hate picking up stitches! Much of the picking up of stitches is done in purl, as part of the body. These stitches should be picked up very close to the edge.
