Patchwork Pelerine
The shape of this shawl is taken from Elizabeth Zimmermann’s garter stitch pelerine in her book ‘Knitting Workshop’, a pattern which has always intrigued me. While hers is knitted in one piece from the neck down, mine is made up of a patchwork of small squares. It’s like a blanket you can wear.
The pelerine has a square front and a triangular back and buttons down the front. It is 89 cm wide and 56 cm deep / 35 x 22”.
The 72 squares in the pelerine are knitted in the round, using small amounts of thin 4 ply sock yarn. I used the 24 little balls of wool from the 2015 Opal Advent Calendar but you could use leftover yarn or even one variegated yarn throughout - you will need about 240 - 250g in all. The pattern also calls for about 180g of a plain colour to edge and join all those squares.
I enjoyed every minute of knitting this and hope you will too.
All my ravelry patterns are free to download but, if you enjoy them, please consider making a donation to the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, a charity which funds research and supports the families of children with a liver disease.
