Paper Wings Socks
Fragile, ephemeral, and beloved for their beauty, butterflies are so magical that it’s almost hard to believe they exist at all. Their short lives are filled with transformation, vivid colour, and deep meaning. They do a lot of practical work in the world. As important pollinators and flagship indicators of an ecosystem’s health, each butterfly species is intimately tied to its specific habitat, closely connected to the plants they grow up on, feed from, and pollinate. They hold intense spiritual and emotional symbolism for many people: the inspiration or comfort you feel when one of these little creatures crosses your path is something to savour.
The Paper Wings Socks are a whimsical, absorbing project. They’re approachable if you’re new to socks but filled with details to delight sock knitters of all levels. The pattern includes three sizes and begins with a simple 2x2 rib cuff leading into an abstract pattern of little wings along the legs. As written, the socks are knit from the top down and completed with a pretty eye of partridge heel and wedge toe, but feel free to sub in your own preferred techniques and finishes as you see fit: the pattern format makes them easy to adapt.
