The shawl starts at the back of the neck and is worked downward in widening rows, with increases at both ends and the center, to form a wide triangle.

There are three sections, separated by wide filet bands, and a simple one-row lower border.

My model is 63” wide along the top and 23” deep at the center, but the directions allow you to make it larger or smaller.

A Strange Enchantment

Sometimes the oddest things can inspire a design.

In July I ordered yarn from a company in Denmark called “Hobbii” – my first time ordering from them. When the yarn arrived several weeks later my husband picked up the mail, squeezed the package and (misreading the return address) said “it looks like you got some Hobbit yarn!”

I chuckled a bit to myself and was about to correct him, but then thought “Why not? Let him think it is Hobbit yarn!” - rather enchanted by the idea. How cool to be crocheting with “Hobbit yarn!” What should I make with it? Why, Hobbit-themed shawls, of course!

Not quite sure what my first “Hobbit Shawl” would be, I selected a cake of Twister in delicious purples (not particularly “Hobbit-like” colors, but somehow it was calling to me) and began crocheting.

The luscious purple colors led me onward, eagerly forging a twisted path through challenging angles and perilous trebles. Curved Shells led to Shells with Bars, and then Shells with Triangles. Hobbii’s Twister yarn had me climbing hills and then mountains - dodging boulders thrown by Stone Giants - captured by Goblins in underground caves – and battling wits in the dark with a strange creature.

Enchanted, I wielded my crochet hook over the Misty Mountains as if it was Orcrist the Goblin-Cleaver, finally emerging triumphant at the end of my long journey.

And so, dear reader, that is how a misunderstanding led to my enchantment, and the first shawl in this group of “Hobbit Shawls” was born…
