Opposite Views Cowl is a two-color cowl knitted flat on the bias and then sewn using the Kitchener stitch. The pattern, which is based on my Opposite Views Shawl, alternates garter stitch and mosaic sections which are exactly the same but with the colors used in the opposite order, making them mirror images of each other. The mosaic is easy but never boring to execute, making the cowl a relaxing but also fun knit.

The cowl is totally adjustable both in length and in width (resizing instructions are provided).

For my original sample, like for the shawl I used worsted weight yarn, as I wanted a warm cowl to wear during the cold season, but this cowl can also be knitted using Sport weight or DK yarns (or even fingering) and resized using the instructions provided in the pattern.

For this pattern I strongly recommend to use two solid colors with high contrast.

Malabrigo Rios (100% Merino Superwash, 192 m / 210 yds per skein), worsted weight

1 skein in color A, shown in Black
1 skein in color B, shown in Natural

For my sample I used 0.8 skeins of color A (154 m / 168 yds) and 0.8 skeins of color B.

Please note that yardage is an estimate and depends on knitting style, tension, yarn and needles used.

NEEDLES
5.0 mm / US 8 (5.5 / US 9 for bind off) long circular recommended.
Or size needed to obtain proper gauge.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON THE NEEDLES
Depending on your knitting style, for the mosaic section, it might be necessary to go up a needle size. This because the mosaic tends to tighten the fabric. For this reason, I strongly suggest to make gauge swatch for both the garter stitch and the mosaic section and see if you prefer to use a bigger needle for the mosaic to make the two sections more homogeneous.

Il pattern, che è basato sul mio scialle Opposite Views, alterna sezioni a legaccio e sezioni in mosaico che sono identiche ma con I colori invertiti rendendole così l’immagine speculare l’una dell’altra. Il mosaico è semplice da lavorare ma mai noioso, rendendo questo scialle rilassante ma al tempo stesso divertente da lavorare.

Le dimensioni del collo sono facilmente modificabili sia in altezza che in circonferenza (le istruzioni per la modifica delle dimensioni sono incluse nel pattern).

Come per lo scialle, anche per il collo ho usato un filato di tipo ‘worsted’, perché volevo un collo caldo da indossare durante la stagione fredda, ma il pezzo può essere realizzato anche utilizzando filati Sport o DK (o anche fingering) e adattando le dimensioni utilizzando le istruzioni relative incluse nel pattern.

Per questo collo suggerisco fortemente di utilizzare due colori solidi molto contrastanti tra loro.

Per il mio pezzo originale ho utilizzato 0,8 matasse del colore A (154 m) e 0,8 matasse del colore B.

Nota importante: la quantità di filato utilizzata dipende da numerosi fattori quali stile di lavorazione, tensione, filato e ferri utilizzati.

FERRI
5,0 mm (5,5 mm per la chiusura) o una misura adeguata ad avere una tensione/un campione simile a quello del modello originale.

NOTA IMPORTANTE SUI FERRI: In base al proprio modo di lavorare (tensione, etc), per la sezione a mosaico potrebbe necessario utilizzare una misura maggiore di ferri (ad es. se si utilizzano dei 5 mm per le sezioni a legaccio potrebbe essere necessario utilizzare dei 5,5 mm per il mosaico). Questo perché il mosaico tende a ‘tirare’, rendendo il lavoro più rigido. Per questo motivo, suggerisco caldamente di fare un campione sia per il legaccio che per il mosaico prima di cominciare a lavorare il collo in modo da poter decidere se si preferisce usare una misura più grande per il mosaico in modo da rendere le sezioni più omogenee.
