About Olivia and her school: Olivia has OPD syndrome spectrum disorder, optic nerve hypoplasia and global developmental delay. How she is affected from head to toe: delayed myelination of the frontal lobes, small optic nerves, mild hearing loss (wears hearing aids), pulmonary stenos (heart condition), joint contractures in her fingers, low tone, uses a wheelchair, walker and standing frame and wears ankle-foot orthotics. All this is caused by a genetic mutation on one of her x chromosomes. Olivia is non verbal and not yet “mobile” although she rolls everywhere!
Renfrew is a school for children with delays. Olivia is currently in their preschool program where she receives physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, vision therapy, feeding therapy, etc. Renfrew is play-based so all the therapies are fun! The kids get music therapy and to garden in the greenhouse. Renfrew has multiple sensory rooms for the kids to play and learn in. They introduce adapted communication devises to the non verbal kids like Olivia. They do a bit of everything at Renfrew! Olivia’s favourite things are the swing in her classroom and the water tables.
