Ocean Stream Free-Range notaponcho
Please note that the pattern is not free but the design is in knitalong form with the link at the bottom of the page. The free knitalong has been available since 2007 but the pattern is only now posted for sale. Sorry for the confusion.
This design began as a knitalong way back in 2007 and is still available free in its raw state but I had resisted creating a pattern in the name of free-range until now. After so many requests, I finally relented! The pattern provides instructions for creating a simpler version of the one shown with options for working the entire piece in variegated or hand-painted yarns rather than intarsia. Of course, intarsia provides the full surface play so a guiding color chart is also included.
No matter how you knit it, the finished creation is loose, comfortable and very dramatic. My model, Hannah Epstein, took off with the original four years ago, using it to toss over jeans as you can see, so I’ve made myself many others since. I’ve worn my purple version (shown in progress in the Knitalong link below) to festive occastions as well as over jeans. Being one-size, it always fits no matter what shape I’m in.
The design is perfect for plus-sizes, by the way. A note is included for increasing as needed but the one-size version will fit sizes 08-18.
Yarns are mixed. the origional is made primarily from an extinct yarn Blue Heron Rayon in Blue Violet and silk but the pattern offers other options. Actually, nearly anything works. Hand-dyed yarns can really strut their stuff here.
