This is a basic pattern for an adult size mitten with a unique thumb shaping method.

It is suitable as a first mitten project with lots of additional explanations and tips.
I suggest a Bulky weight yarn for this mitten.

They work up fast and make a great gift! You can get very creative with this pattern! How about adding something with duplicate stitch?
