Embellishment, trim, hardware, notions, bric-a-brac—whatever you call it, I’m obsessed with finishing details. The irony is, my designs often start with the tiny pieces I find in haberdasheries around the world and online. Rather than buy buttons, hooks, or snaps as an afterthought, I stockpile these items and will often design around them.

The vintage sequin patch shown here was a souvenir from an incredible independent fabric store in Columbia, South Carolina. It serves as a portal for daydreaming: remembering the time I spent browsing with a friend, and wondering who owned the patch before, what it might have adorned, and where it might have been worn.

The woven cable brim of Norah is knit first, subtly shaped with needle size changes. The remainder is picked up and knit, and the patch is added last, straddling the ornate brim and simpler stockinette cap for an organic, decoupaged feel.
