Notes From the Designer:

Whenever I think of the festive season, I imagine all the pretty Christmas decorations, especially Christmas tree ornaments. Noël, which is the French word for Christmas, reminds me of that season.

This circular shape shawl features two repeating sections, a picot lace and a solid section imitating patterns that can be found on various Christmas baubles. By only increasing each section on one side, the shawl develops a spiral look which adds to the illusion of a sphere. The pattern offers two options to give the shawl a classy finish: a simple single crochet edge or a delicate 3 stitch I-cord border.

Worked in Pearlescent Fingering, Noël exhibits drape and sheen to make it the perfect accessory for an evening dress or the little something that will upgrade your everyday outfit.

  • Noël is a circular-shaped shawl worked flat in rows after an initial setup in the round. It consists of 2 alternating stitch patterns that repeat in 5 sections. After working 3 setup rows the shawl grows in depth by a 2-row repeat. On the right side rows, each section is increased at the beginning only to create a spiral look while keeping the circular shape of the shawl.
  • This pattern includes written instructions and a corresponding chart at the end of the pdf.
  • The depth of the shawl can be adjusted but note that the shawl as written uses up approximately 1,010 yards (almost 2 entire skeins of Pearlescent Fingering). For a larger shawl, you’ll need additional yarn.
  • Note, while Noël grows in depth the side where the increases are worked at the end of the row will appear longer. Both sides will reach the same length during blocking.
  • When the desired depth of the shawl is reached, you can choose to either finalize the shawl with a simple single-crochet-chain border or opt for the intermediate version by attaching an i-cord border that gives the shawl a neat finish.
  • Markers are placed to indicate a change in the stitch pattern. When crocheting into a stitch with a marker, remove it after the stitch has been worked. The instructions will specify where to place the marker next. After working several rows of the 2-row repeat and familiarizing yourself with the pattern you can omit placing the markers if you prefer.
