Who doesn’t need a bit of brightness? This design, Niji (the rainbow), explores the interaction of brilliant colors. Rainbows, historically considered symbols of peace and love, are best known for showing off a full range of seven prismatic colors. Interestingly, not every rainbow shows off all seven; the actual colors depend on sun’s distance from the horizon. Rainbow will be mostly blue and green when the sun is high up in the sky, and mostly red and orange when the sun is lower, closer to the horizon. This design explores the interplay of hues in the cool and warm portions of the spectrum using the incredibly vivid colorways of Yarn Carnival yarns.

The pattern includes two shapes to choose from: my classic crescent shawl, worked from the top down and shaped with easy garter stitch short rows; and a rectangular stole, which is worked lengthwise from a center provisional cast on. The simple lacy colorwork is worked with slipped stitches, creating seamless blending of colors much like what is seen in a rainbow. There are only a few basic lace stitches combined with simple garter and eyelet stitches, which makes Niji easy enough even for a first-time lace knitter.
