Narrow Fancy Stripe #6
This pattern is from 1892 Butterick’s The Art of Knitting, p.11. There are 4 pattern rows; the 2 wrong-side rows are purl across. Cast-on is a multiple of 4 stitches. The pattern can be worked either flat as in this version or in the round by changing the even rows to knit instead of purl. This was probably intended for the leg portion of a sock but it would look beautiful in a vest or other items.
The swatch has 6 repeats and is 3 inches wide at gauge.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, k2tog, YO and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
34 yards of Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 crochet thread makes 10 inches of a 24-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
