Formerly a fundraiser pattern that raised over $1000 for Knitters Without Borders/Tricoteuses Sans Frontieres (thank you!) this pattern is now available only as a free download.

Pattern includes a chart and tutorial for the stitch pattern.

Knit in one piece. Sides are worked flat on a circular needle (you can also work back and forth on dpns) and the base is knit from the outside in on dpns. No cable needle required! The stitch pattern looks more complicated than it really is. A step-by-step photo tutorial for row 4 of the Smocking Stitch is available on MK’s Flickr page as well as a PDF included with the pattern.

This pattern has been tech edited by Eleanor Dixon.

CORRECTIONS:
Pattern instructions for base have been revised as of 30 September 2007

NOTES:
The pattern increases (inc 1) may be m1 (aka lifted bar), k1 into row below (link is to excellent tutorial on the TechKnitting blog), yarn forward (like a yarn over, but in the reverse direction), or yarn over (knit into the back of the loop to twist it and close the hole on the next round). kfb will throw off the stitch count! If you prefer kfb, you will have to revise the pattern accordingly. Nellis76 has done the revision as follows:
round 2: k1, kfb (24 st)
3: kfb, k2 (32 st)
4: k3, kfb (40 st)
5: kfb, k4 (48 st)
6: k5, kfb (56 st)
7: kfb, k6 (64 st)
8: k7, kfb (72 st)
9: kfb, k8 (80 st)
