This is part of Sanguine Gryphon’s Winter 2010 literary themed collection. It’s a non-traditionally structured stole, knit from the nape outwards, essentially as a neck-down shawl. When
the shoulder depth is reached, the center portion is bound off, and each “Wing” is worked separately. Instructions are provided in both written and charted formats.

ERRATA:
In the charted instructions:
1. Chart 4, Part 1 - the instructions under Box F should read “Work Box F five times”, not six.

In the written instructions:

1. After R13, each row number should be one less. In other words, R16 should be R15, R18 should be R17, etc.
2. R11 should read: K1, yo, k4, cdd, k4, yo3 three times, k4, cdd, k4, yo, k1.

I’m currently reknitting this in Little Traveller on a 3.0mm needle; as I knit through the written instructions, I’ll add any other errors I find into this list.

Wondering who Mrs Whatsit is? She’s a tramp, or angel, or something else from Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle In Time….

After a few moments that seemed like forever to Meg, Mrs Murray came back in, holding the door open for – was it the tramp? It seemed small for Meg’s idea of a tramp. The age or sex was impossible to tell, for it was completely bundled up in clothes. Several scarves of assorted colors were tied about the head, and a man’s felt hat perched atop. A shocking pink
stole was knotted about a rough overcoat, and black rubber boots covered the feet.

“Mrs Whatsit,” Charles said suspiciously…

Later she transforms from her tramp role, revealing “…a pair of wings…made of rainbows, of light upon water, of poetry.”
