Mountain Veil Shawl
A Crochet Pattern For A Triangular Shawl Made With Airy Stitches
If you like this construction but prefer a rectangular shape, check out #MountainMuseShawl—the same stitch language adapted into a rectangular shawl.
Float into evening with the Mountain Veil Shawl, a triangular wrap that lets color and openwork breathe. This pattern is written in US terms and focuses on airy stitches to create a light, lacy fabric—perfect for warm nights, cool summer evenings, or layering over spring outfits.
Design & color:
The sample is worked from two yarn cakes, joined one after the other for a soft, flowing color transition.
06 Purple Gem — worked from the outside toward the center
09 Chocolate Rose — worked from the center outward
You can use any yarn you prefer—hand-dyed cakes, gradient yarns, or solids all create beautiful variations. Changing colors every few rows works well and is fully supported by the instructions.
Construction notes:
The stitch pattern is mostly airy/openwork, so your shawl will be lightweight with lovely drape.
In some rows the written stitch count in parentheses may not exactly match the visible stitch count (this happens when chains and multiple stitches are worked together); this is normal and the counts return to the expected totals in subsequent rows. I’ve kept the numbers to reflect the overall growth of the row so you can follow easily.
A printable PDF, helpful charts, and photos are included to guide you through the trickier sections.
Finished measurements (with recommended yarn & hook):
Width (wingspan): 220 cm
Length (center front to tip): 110 cm
Each short side: 155 cm
Customization:
Want a larger or smaller shawl? The pattern is built in repeatable sections—add or remove repeats to adjust the width or length. Guidance on stitch multiples and how to modify repeats is included in the pattern notes.
Prefer a different look? Try one cake only, swap solids, or control the cake colors (separating into smaller skeins and changing at row ends) for precise shading—this uses a little more yarn but yields very clean transitions.
Finishing & care:
Blocking is recommended to open the lace and set the shawl’s final shape.
Minimal weaving is required; instructions show where to fasten off and how to keep ends tidy for a neat border finish.
Skill level:
Suitable for crocheters comfortable with lace repeats and following charted instructions. Clear written steps, charts, and photos are included to support you every step of the way.
