While I was working on my Mount Floral socks, I suddenly decided that I needed to turn the pattern into a cowl. So I did! If you’ve read the intro to the socks, you’ll know that I named them Mount Floral, because when viewed in one direction, the special stitches look like little mountain peaks, and when viewed from the other direction, they look more like flowers. In the cowl, it’s fun because the special stitches can be seen from both directions at once!

The stripes in the cowl are wider than in the socks, because one, it was necessary, and two, it makes the knitting flow better for the cowl, as there are more resting rounds. The pattern is easily memorizable and works up quickly.

While I have used a set that has six contrast colors, feel free to play with the number of colors used and the striping pattern to make the cowl your own! This pattern is highly customizable both in width and circumference.

Finished Measurements:
These are the three suggested sizes, but the pattern is highly customizable. If you wish to increase the width or circumference from the below dimensions, you will need more yarn.

7” (18cm) wide x 24 (61cm) circumference
OR
7” (18cm) wide x 36” (91cm) circumference (Sample is knit in this size.)
OR
9.5” (24cm) wide x 24” (61cm) circumference

Gauge: 21 stitches and 28 rows over 4” (10cm) in stockinette stitch in the round

Yarn:
7” (18cm) wide x 24 (61cm) circumference:
MC: 70g or 162yds (148m) DK weight yarn
CCs: 6 x 15g or 35 yds (32m) each DK weight yarn, OR 70g total for a two color cowl

7” (18cm) wide x 36” (91cm) circumference:
MC: 100g or 231yds (211m) DK weight yarn
CCs: 6 x 20g or 46 yds (42m) each DK weight yarn, OR 100g total for a two color cowl

9.5” (24cm) wide x 24” (61cm) circumference:
MC: 100g or 231yds (211m) DK weight yarn
CCs: 6 x 20g or 46 yds (42m) each DK weight yarn, OR 100g total for a two color cowl

Needles: Size 5 (3.75mm) 16” (40cm) circular needle, plus another Size 5 circular needle or one size smaller.

Extras: A crochet hook in a similar size to your knitting needle, scrap yarn, stitch markers, 2 removable stitch markers, scale, and a tapestry needle.

I used approximately 5.1g of yarn per stripe for my 7” (18cm) width cowl.
I used approximately 7g of yarn per stripe in my swatch of the 9.5” (24cm) width cowl.
