Motuiti Cardigan
The Motuiti cardigan is a modified drop shoulder cardigan worked seamlessly from the bottom up. It is cast on at the bottom and a rib hem is worked before the cable pattern is introduced and worked up the body to the underarm. The front and back are separated at the underarm and worked separately up to the shoulders with shaping for the neckline and short rows for the shoulders. The front and back shoulders are joined with a three-needle bind-off. The sleeves are picked up and worked down with decreases to a ribbed cuff. Finally, the neckband then button bands are picked and worked in rib.
When this yarn is washed and blocked it blooms and sticks together (puffs out to fill the gaps between stitches). The gauge this cardigan has been worked is a slightly tighter gauge to give this clear stitch definition. These two factors combined mean the fabric created is firm and holds true to the knitted shape (it does not easily stretch out of shape). Therefore, when choosing a size to knit, consider the ease then choose the corresponding size, to avoid it being too tight. 4” / 10 cm is the recommended amount of ease for this cardigan using this yarn (more information is available within the schematic in the pattern). This is important, along with firm blocking of the cable panels to avoid the finished garment being too tight.
