Thank you so much for your interest in my Motte and Bailey sweater pattern! It was such a FUN sweater to design!

The name comes from a type of castle fortification that originated in Normandy. Interestingly, it can also refer to a debate strategy. Hunt around on the internet and you’ll find all kinds of information on the castle fortification and Motte and Bailey as a rhetorical device!

The sweater features three quarter length colorwork sleeves in two contrasting colors, worked bottom up, and ultimately seamed with a body worked in a third color. The sweater is worked in DK weight yarn.

The sample was made with the following:
Malabrigo Arroyo (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 3½ oz/100 gr; 335 yds/306 m) in #096 Sunset (MC), #195 Black (CC1) and #063 Natural (CC2)

Needles: US 6 (4 mm) circular needles 16” and 32” long, and needles in preferred style for small circumference knitting in the round, OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN THE CORRECT GAUGE.

Notions: Stitch marker, waste yarn for use as stitch holder, tapestry needle

22 sts and 29 rows = 4” in Stockinette stitch, after blocking. Save time by taking time to check gauge.

NOTE
The body of this sweater is knit in the round to the armholes, then it is divided, and the upper back and front are worked back and forth in rows. The sleeves are knit in the round to the armholes, then the sleeve caps are worked back and forth in rows. The body and sleeves are sewn together, then the neckband is worked from stitches picked up at the neck edge.
