Named for a complex but robust gemstone, Morganite is the perfect hat project for combining a number of simple knitting skills into a stitch pattern that delivers more than the sum of its parts. Though the cabling, smocked stitches and colourwork are each relatively simple elements in themselves, working them together results in a stitch pattern that looks more challenging than it truly is. Pleasing crown shaping is reminiscent of the cut facets of a jewel, and the hat is topped off with an optional pompom.

Instructions are given in both written and charted formats with descriptions for each of the cable stitches used as well as details on smocking stitches.

To knit this hat requires two shades of yarn which can either be subtle or strong in contrast depending on the look required. You will require 2 skeins of your MC and one skein of CC for each size, which provides enough yarn for both hat and pompom.

Templates and instructions for making the pompom are included, as well as full schematics.

The recommended yarn is a smooth, cool merino yarn which provides a lot of bounce and roundness to the finished stitch pattern. Please pay special attention to row gauge when knitting, especially if using a yarn with more drape than the recommended yarn, adjusting brim length if necessary.
