mooncoin hat
♪The Music ♪
The Rose of Mooncoin is a ballad written in the 1800s by Watt Murphy, teacher ~ builder ~ writer and poet, for his lost love Elizabeth. Upon hearing of their romance, Elizabeth’s parents sent her from her home in County Kilkenny, Ireland to England; Watt was heart-broken and composed this tune in her memory. In part the lyrics say: “Where the thrush and the robin their sweet notes entwine” - what a beautiful image to translate into cables.
Pattern Notes
The Mooncoin Hat features the distinctive Mooncoin cable separated by single honeycomb cables. Beginning with an irregular ribbing that flows into the main pattern stitches, the honeycomb cable columns are carried to the peak during the crown decreases.
Instructions are included for making a slouchier hat - this will, of course, require more yarn than stated.
The pattern contains both charted and written directions. Each size has its own chart and set of written directions. Charts and written directions for each size have been given their own page(s) for easy printing.
