Montinore is a deep asymmetrical triangle shawl inspired by the rolling hills and triangular plots of the Montinore Estate Winery in Oregon. Garter stitch stripes, eyelets and short row wedges bring this shawl to life, with colors as deep as the grapes and wines grown and created by the vineyard.

I created this shawl especially for Knotty Lamb, an elegant yarn shop in Oregon that loves to support independent designers and dyers. I was inspired by not only the yarn that I used for this pattern, but also by the Montinore Estate Winery where I unveiled this pattern for the first time in July 2019!

Yarn Notes: For this pattern, you will want to choose 2 full size skeins (at least 463 yds / 423 m each) for Colors A & B in complimenting colors. Speckled or variegated yarns work very well for these! Then choose 4 mini-skeins (about 110 yards or so each) for Colors 1, 2, 3, & 4, also in complimenting colors. These could be very fun in a gradient of colors, or all bright accents! I recommend choosing solid or semi-solid for these colors. See below for exact quantities. I’ve also included a photo of my yarn before I wound it as the last photo here.

Skill level: Beginner!! No brioche here, folks. All garter stitch, with some short rows (no wrapping stitches), stripes, and some eyelet lace. Techniques used: knit, short rows, yarn-overs, knitting increases, asymmetrical triangle shawl shaping, optional fringe.

This pattern has both written instructions and a chart for the Eyelet Stripes only.

Construction Notes: This deep asymmetrical triangle shawl is knit from side to side, beginning at the small tip and ending at the long bind off edge. The top of the shawl while wearing it will be the left edge as you’re knitting it, where all of the shawl shaping increases will be. One stitch will be increased every RS row, except in the short row wedges. You will begin with small short row wedges, divided by simple garter stitch stripes. All 6 colors will be used very quickly! You will then work large eyelet stripes which are divided by small garter stitch stripes. The center and focal point of the shawl comes next, where you will work the same short row wedges and stripes as the first section, but these will be much larger now! These mimic the interesting shapes of the vineyard plots at the Montinore Estate. The shawl ends with large garter and eyelet stripes, followed by small stripes for a fast finish and to use all of your yarn! Have any leftovers? I had a tiny bit, just enough to add some fringe to the bottom edge of my shawl! The bottom edge is also the right edge while you’re knitting it, so this is also a great way to hide all of your ends instead of weaving them in!

I love to wear this shawl wrapped around my neck kerchief-style, with the fringe hanging down. It’s a perfect accent for any outfit, dressed up or down!

Gauge: 21 sts x 46 rows = 4” / 10cm; measured in garter stitch worked flat (taken after blocking).
