Modern Hygge Shawl
This spring and summer I was scheduled to travel and teach in several states at various shops, conventions, and festivals. Unfortunately, all teaching events have been canceled due to the COVID-19 crisis. So I thought since we can’t get together in person, why not get together virtually in an MKAL?
The one secret I will clue you in on is that this pattern is a shawl. Yes! Another shawl. But don’t worry, this is a good one. This pattern is an exploration of technique and texture with a subtle play on color. Nothing too difficult - don’t worry, but also not too easy, just somewhere right in the middle. The shawl starts out very simple and gradually becomes more interesting with each clue.
For the most part, you are holding the DK weight with the mohair to add a bit of body to your stitches as well as a delicate halo. There are some portions where you are working the mohair single-stranded (on its own), and others where the mohair is doubled (onto itself). This allows for not only a play in fabric density but texture as well. The finished piece is quite large, yet light, and honestly one of the coziest things I have truly ever knit.
Below I have listed participating shops where you can purchase a kit if you like. If you would like to choose your own colors, below I have listed the yardage of each yarn you will need. Overall you are working with a total of three colors. You will need the same three colors in DK weight and in Mohair, however, you will not need the same yardage. When choosing colors, be sure that the mohair and the DK weights are the same three colors. When it comes to choosing contrast, you can have as much or as little contrast as you like, just make sure that there is contrast between all three colors. If you wanted to work with a variegated yarn, the only color that can withstand color variegation is “A” (details below).
I hope you’ll join me in the journey of this MKAL. See the pattern details and clue schedule below. If you have any questions about yarn, the pattern, where to get your yarn, or the MKAL, please feel free to email me at me@graceakhrem.com or reach out to me in the Ravelry group.
