Mitred Square Bags 004
Mitred Squares, also known as Domino Knitting, also known as Modular Knitting - some of the names for this great patchwork technique.
Yes, it’s knitted in squares but there’s only two seams to sew to make this bag. Each square is picked up from those around it.
The size of the bag depends on the yarn you use. So if you want a small handbag (9x8x2in) use 4ply yarn. A bigger handbag (12x10x2.5in) uses DK yarn. A large tote bag (17x15x3.5in) uses chunky yarn.
Stitches used:
Cast on, knit, purl, picking up stitches (diagram), decreasing using sl 1-k2tog-psso (diagram).
Materials
Any yarn you choose - I worked these samples in cream 4ply cotton, a Magic Ball Yarn made up of odds and ends of blue yarns from my stash, and natural shaded Noro chunky-weight wool which I felted.
Needles to match your yarn.
Lining fabric and handles. I used ready-made handles for the cream bag, the blue bag I lined with recycled jeans and used waistbands for the handles. The natural shaded bag is finished as a drawstring tote and I used an old belt for the strap.
The bag has sides and a flat base - I include instructions on how to make a removable base stiffening.
Needle sizes, yarn requirements and finished bag size are as follows:
4ply 3.25mm 23 x 20 x 5cm 225metres (246yds)
DK 4mm 30 x 26 x 6.5cm 300metres (327yds)
Aran 4.5mm 34 x 30 x 7.5cm 375metres (409yds)
Chunky 6.5mm 43 x 38 x 9.5cm 450metres (490yds)
Super chunky 8mm 54 x 48 x 12cm 525metres (572yds)
