Miss Havisham
Inspired by Dickens’ Miss Havisham these mitts involve a variety of simple techniques such as provisional cast on, simple lace knitting, beading, picot bind off and basic embroidery, to create a beautifully delicate accessory.
Kits including the right amount of yarn and beads to make the gloves are available from Vintage Purls.
The pattern contains written descriptions of how to work the techniques involved and charts for the cuff lace and hand pattern.
Size
Women’s medium, (a hand measuring 19cm (7½”) around palm).
Ease
Intended to be worn 2.5cm / 1” of negative ease over the palm of the hand.
Clarification for cuff lace:
Row 6 of the cuff lace requires you to bind off stitches at the beginning. I am aware that this can cause confusion since there is ambiguity about whether you count the stitches used in the process of binding off or if you count the stitches actually discarded. In this case we count the stitches employed in the bind off process (which is five). I’ll spell out exactly how it works below:
Bead the first stitch, knit it, knit another stitch, pass 2nd stitch on right needle over first (2sts worked)
Knit 1, pass 2nd stitch on right needle over first (3sts worked)
Knit 1, pass 2nd stitch on right needle over first (4sts worked)
Knit 1, pass 2nd stitch on right needle over first (5sts worked)
then continue with the rest of the row:
Knit 3, yo, k2tog, k1 (12 sts worked in total, 7sts remain on needle)
Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you’d like further explanation.
