Midnight Cap
Knitted in the subtle green colorway of Harrisville Designs’ new Nightshades yarn, the Midnight Cap has a super-thick brim and cables that give it extra warmth for midwinter weather. A modern take on the watch cap, it keeps the wind at bay. Fold the brim to the outside like a traditional watch cap or to the inside to reveal more of the cable motif.
Finished Size 20” circumference at brim and 9¼“ tall.
Yarn Harrisville Designs Nightshades (80% American Cormo, 20% wool; 250 yd / 3½ oz): VCR, 1 skein (see Notes).
Needles Sizes 4 (3.5 mm) and 5 (3.75 mm): 16” circular (cir). Size 6 (4 mm): 16” cir and set of double-pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
Notions Marker (m); waste yarn for provisional CO; spare cir needle in same size or smaller than smallest needle; cable needle (cn); tapestry needle.
Gauge 29 sts and 25 rnds = 4” in charted patt on largest needle.
Notes
- This hat is worked in the round from the bottom up. The brim begins with a provisional cast-on and is worked for several rounds. The brim is then folded along the turning rounds and the live stitches are joined to the provisional cast-on by knitting stitches together.
- After turning the brim, the rib pattern shifts by 2 stitches to allow the brim to fold over the hat more easily.
- The sample hat used almost all of one skein of yarn. Consider purchasing an extra skein as insurance.
