The Finnish folklore tradition includes a concept of being ’covered by
forest’ (‘metsänpeitto’ in Finnish, a literal translation would be a ́forest blanket ́), which is a mythic state conquering someone’s mind when wandering in woods. If you are covered by the forest, you are completely lost, and no-one can find you. The belief was that you could undo the cover by turning your coat inside out or by bending down and looking back between your legs. Some of the people covered by the forest came back, some disappeared for good.
Metsänpeitto is a yoked sweater worked with two colors and has spruce branchlet pattering at the hem and cuffs. The colorwork patterns don’t require long floats and are easy enough even for an unexperienced knitter. If you prefer, you can use more than one contrast color for the hem and cuff patterning. Please, make sure to pick colors with high contrast to make the patterning stand out.
The sweater is worked from the bottom up, and the sleeves are worked separately and joined with the body before working the yoke.
