Inspiration:

I was intrigued in knitting this “illusion” pattern from Mrs. Walkers book, but of course had to “hooliganize” it. The oranges remind me of Arizona desert, the funky Mesa landscape thus the name. I am always drawn to shapes, geometric play, and visual interest.

The hat was born to test this super funky pattern, and I just had to do a matching cowl.
The cowl offers an opportunity to reverse the main and the contrast colour from the hat design.
Play with it, get creative.

I would advise to choose bold, bright and heavily contrasting colours.
Malabrigo does not disappoint in their abundance of choices. I love this fiber. Soft, full of texture and perfectly holding shape. It’s perfect for this pattern.

Enjoy. This knit challenges but is super fun.

Sizes: S/M, L/XL

Finished Measurements:
20 (25) in; 51 (63.5) cm neck circumference, 40 (50) in; 102 (127) cm circumference at widest point.

Gauge: 24 sts/ 24rows in 4 in/10cm blocked swatch worked in the colorwork as charted on size 7 US needles. Knitted in the round.
Adjust needle size to achieve gauge.

Yarn: Malabrigo Dos Tierras, 50% Merino and 50% Baby Alpaca Mix (1 skein=210 yards, 100g)

Colours/Amounts needed:
C1: Teal Feather (background)1 (2)skein(s),
C2: Flama (contrast pattern) 1 (2) skein(s).

Notions:
• Size 7 US (4.5 mm) 16-inch (40cm) circulars needles to start, switch to 24 in (61cm) cable as sts increase,
• 8(10) stitch markers, 1 in different colour to denote BOR,
• Darning needle,
• Blocking mats.

Skills required:
• Stranded knitting from chart,
• Simple left and right leaning increases,
• Simple knit and purl sts,
• German short rows.

Notes about construction:
Knitted stranded, from top to bottom, in the round, in one piece.
Catching floats is recommended on knit sts only and every 2nd st. Stagger float catch points.
