Meringue Cardigan
Make this cardigan in wool for winter, or make it in hemp, linen, or cotton for summer.
Stockinette stitch in a slightly loose gauge makes a lovely, effortless drape. Short rows are used to make the front shorter than the back for a stylish and fun shape. Increases are worked at the sides for an A-line silhouette which adds to the drape and flow of this elegant, but casual cardigan. The picot bind-off adds a touch of charm and lots of interest.
This cardigan is worked from the top down in one piece. The set-in sleeves are picked up at the armholes and worked top down and in the round.
This pattern uses a provisional cast-on, and it uses short rows to shape the shoulders, sleeve caps, and bottom.
Sizes XS (S, M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL)
Bust measurements of the garment when buttoned: 32 (36, 40, 44, 48, 52.75, 56) inches/81 (91, 102, 112, 122, 134, 142) cm. Size S is shown on model in photo with 2 inches of positive ease.
Gauge:
20 sts x 28 rows = 4 inches/10 cm in stockinette stitch with larger needles.
Yarn:
Elsebeth Lavold, Hempathy (34% Hemp, 41% Cotton, 25% Modal); 50g = 153 yards (140 meters), color 34: 6 (7, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11) skeins.
Or use any yarn of similar weight that achieves gauge 850 (940, 1060, 1160, 1300, 1400, 1550) yards/777 (860, 969, 1061, 1189, 1280, 1417) m.
Yarn Note: The yarn used is typically worked with smaller needles for a gauge of 22 to23 sts = 4 inches/10 cm. Larger needles were used for a looser gauge resulting in a lighter weight knit with a nice drape. If you substitute the yarn, and desire the same drape, use a yarn that usually achieves a gauge of 5.5 or 5.75 sts per inch. See gauge information and always work a gauge swatch first.
Needles:
Size 6 (4 mm): 32”/80cm circular and set of 4 double-pointed needles.
Size 5 (3.75mm): 32”/80cm circular needles.
Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.
