Mercenaria
This shallow crescent shawl is named for its shell-themed origins and its Canopy purples, reminiscent of colors found in New England native American wampum or sewant, traditional beads made of quahog shell.
This is a fun and challenging two or three-color project with an unusual but functional silhouette created through increases at the ends of every row. It explores tone and texture through a seashell theme, featuring three different stitch patterns against a garter stitch foundation. Its result is gorgeous drape and an opportunity to showcase two or three colors (or more if desired). Careful blocking will allow the final piece to bloom and stretch into its full glory, ornamented with a scalloped edge naturally emerging through the most complex of the shell stitch patterns.
Yarn requirements: Medium to heavy fingering or sport weight, approximately:
- 280yds of C1;
- 150 yds of C2; and
- 180 yds of C3.
Shown in The Fibre Co. Canopy Fingering (50% Alpaca, 30% Merino, 20% Rayon from Bamboo; 200 yards / 50 grams) in colorways Crocus (C1, 2 skeins), Cloud Forest (C2, 1 skein), and Purple Passion (C3, 1 skein).
Notions: Plenty of straight pins or T-pins for blocking - up to two small containers.
Suggested needle size: US 7 32” or 40” circular - or size needed to obtain gauge
