Mellifera
A collaboration with Crave Yarn, Mellifera is a bi-colored crescent shaped shawl with a wide, meaningful border. The word “Mellifera” is Latin for honey-bearing. The wonderful colorway of Crave Yarn’s “Golden Hour” instantly reminded me of honey when I started working with it. The first part of the border closest to the body is made to look like honeycomb. The flowers knitted into the points represent a favorite place for honey bees to visit and gather nectar from. I hope you have as much fun with this as I did!
Difficulty
Intermediate - the main body of the shawl is worked in two colors, a Main Color (MC) and a Contrasting Color (CC). Purl ridges in the CC are added to a stockinette background. The knitted on edging is a beautiful, wide border with patterns paying homage to the shawls name. Mellifera is a great knit for adventurous beginners and experienced lace knitters alike.
Construction
This shawl is knit top down with increases on both sides to create its crescent shape. When the body is finished, the stitches for Mellifera’s lace edging are cast on using a knitted CO. The border is knit back and forth joining the last stitch of every RS row together with a stitch from the main body.
Dimensions
59.5 inches wide x 20 inches in depth
Yardage
800 yards of CC and 400 yards of MC. Generous yardage has been added to account for looser knitters.
Gauge
42 rows = 4 inches X 23 wide = 4 inches
Sizes
This shawl is knit in one size but can be adjusted by yarn and needle size. It is important to know that if you make these changes, it may result in different yardage required.
