This is my version of a granny rectangle. The centre strip is extendable and does not require you to work out a chain multiple to begin. The photo tutorial shows you how I did it.

You can make these in any gauge with any yarn. You can use one on its own to make any size granny rectangle you want or you can make it smaller and combine it with other motifs to make all manner of items.
